Raleigh's Hardwood Flooring Installers

A new hardwood floor is one of those projects where the install itself determines almost everything about how it holds up. Done right, hardwood lasts decades. Done wrong, boards start gapping, cupping, or squeaking within a year or two, and by then the fix is a lot more expensive than getting it right the first time. Oak City Floors handles hardwood flooring installation throughout Raleigh and the surrounding The Triangle, and every job goes through the same process regardless of size: proper subfloor prep, real acclimation time, and precise layout before a single board goes down.

We’re not a big-box installer sending out whoever’s available. Our own crew handles the job from the free estimate through the final walkthrough, the same people who measure your space are the people laying your floor. Raleigh homeowners rate us 5.0 stars on Google, and the pattern in those reviews is consistent: we show up when we say we will, we give a real price before starting, and we leave the space clean when we’re done.

What Goes Into a Proper Hardwood Installation

1. Subfloor Inspection and Prep

Before any wood goes down, we check the subfloor for moisture, unevenness, and damage. Installing over a bad subfloor is the single most common reason a new hardwood floor fails early, and it's the step a lot of cheaper installs skip.

2. Acclimation

Wood flooring needs time to adjust to your home's humidity and temperature before installation. Skipping this step is how you end up with gaps or buckling months later, especially given how much Raleigh's humidity swings between seasons.

3. Layout Planning

We plan board direction, transitions, and pattern before starting, so the finished floor reads as intentional, not like it was laid room by room without a plan.

4. Installation

Boards are laid, nailed or glued depending on the subfloor and material, and fitted tight to walls, transitions, and existing trim.

5. Finish and Final Walkthrough

For unfinished hardwood, this includes sanding and finish coats on site. For prefinished material, it's a final inspection and cleanup. Either way, we walk the finished floor with you before calling the job done.

Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood in Raleigh Homes

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the right answer depends on the room and Raleigh’s climate more than personal preference. Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood through and through, it can be sanded and refinished many times over its life, but it expands and contracts more with humidity swings, which matters in a climate where summer humidity and winter heating create real seasonal shifts. Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer over a stable core, it handles humidity changes better and can be installed in a few spots solid hardwood can’t (like over concrete slabs or in basements), though it has a shorter refinishing lifespan.

For most main living spaces in Raleigh, either option works well. For rooms with more humidity exposure, or homes on a slab foundation, we typically recommend engineered hardwood, and we’ll explain exactly why during your estimate rather than defaulting to whichever is easier for us to install.

What a New Hardwood Floor Actually Costs in Raleigh

A flat per-square-foot number sounds simple, but it rarely holds up once we’re actually in your home. Two rooms the same size can cost meaningfully different amounts depending on what’s underneath the surface and what’s coming off it first.

What actually moves that number:

We walk your space in person and give you a written number based on what we actually find, not a rate pulled off a price sheet before we’ve seen the room.

We had a fairly small LVT job - many companies did not want to be bothered or would charge a minimum. Oscar was a professional - he came out to measure then sent us a formal written estimate later that day. We wanted some custom baseboards added to the job, which he agreed to do. His price was very reasonable, his crew was outstanding, the job was completed efficiently and on-time. Best of all, the work is PERFECT.

I can’t say enough good things about the work that Oak City Floor did for us. They were professional, on time, and went above and beyond what we expected them to do. They even went under the house to fix a squeak in the floor that could not be fixed above. Beautiful work and I recommend them highly!

Oak City Floors did an incredible job. They were more than willing to talk through all our questions and concerns. When they were done they went above and beyond to knock out our punch list. They even came back a couple days later to correct a small scratch I put in the floor while moving our fridge back in place - no charge. Very nice folks. I would definitely recommend them to others and would happily call them for another job should I have one pop up. Attached are some before an after photos - an incredible difference. VERY HAPPY!!!!

Why Raleigh Homeowners Pick Us for Hardwood Installation Specifically

A Track Record Built on Installs, Not Just Reviews

Our 5.0-star rating didn't come from marketing, it came from installations that held up. Ask us about a job similar to yours and we'll tell you straight how it went.

Every Installer Is Licensed and On Our Payroll

No subcontracted crews learning your floor plan on the fly. The people on-site are trained, accountable, and working for us directly.

We'll Talk You Out of the Wrong Material

If solid hardwood is the wrong call for your slab foundation or humidity-prone room, we'll say so during the estimate, even if engineered costs less for us to sell.

A Number You Can Actually Hold Us To

Your written estimate reflects your subfloor, your square footage, and your material choice, not a generic rate that shifts once we're on-site.

No Handoff Between the Estimate and the Install

Whoever measures your space is whoever's laying your boards. Nothing gets lost in translation between a salesperson and a crew.

We Don't Skip the Steps You Can't See Later

Subfloor inspection and acclimation time happen on every job, whether it's a small room or a full-home install, because a rushed skip here is what causes problems six months down the line.

Professional Flooring Services Oak City Floors Offer in Raleigh, NC

Hardwood isn’t the right fit for every room, and a lot of homeowners end up mixing materials across their home for good reason.

Hardwood Floor Sanding & Refinishing

Already have hardwood that's lost its shine? Refinishing often costs less than a full replacement and can make an old floor look brand new.

LVP Flooring Installation

For kitchens, mudrooms, and other spaces where water and heavy traffic make hardwood a harder sell, LVP holds up where solid wood struggles.

Laminate Flooring Installation

For bedrooms, living rooms, and hallways where the goal is a wood look without the wood price, laminate gives you that at a lower cost than hardwood.

Tile Flooring Installation

Bathrooms and entryways with constant moisture exposure are usually better served by tile than any type of wood flooring.

Flooring
Repairs

Not every damaged floor, hardwood or otherwise, needs full replacement. We can often repair a section without redoing the whole room.

Stair
Flooring

If you're installing new hardwood on your main floor, matching or refinishing your stairs is worth doing at the same time so the transition doesn't look mismatched.

Raleigh Flooring Contractor FAQs

Cost depends on material choice, square footage, and subfloor condition. We provide a free in-home estimate so you have an exact number before work begins.

It depends on the room and your home's conditions. Engineered hardwood handles humidity swings better and works over concrete slabs, while solid hardwood can be refinished more times over its life. We'll walk you through the tradeoff during your estimate.

[Confirm typical timelines before publishing, varies by square footage and whether existing flooring needs removal.]

[Confirm standard policy before publishing.]

We inspect the subfloor as part of every estimate. Most subfloors are usable with proper prep, but damaged or uneven subfloors need to be addressed before installation to avoid problems later.

Both. We regularly install hardwood in newer construction where homeowners are upgrading from builder-grade flooring, as well as in older homes getting hardwood for the first time.
