Laminate has come a long way from the flooring people associate with the word. Modern laminate replicates the look of hardwood, and increasingly stone or tile, at a lower cost and with better resistance to scratches and daily wear than solid wood. For homeowners who want the warmth of a wood-look floor without the price tag or the maintenance hardwood requires, laminate is often the material that actually makes the most sense, not just the budget compromise.
Oak City Floors installs laminate flooring throughout Raleigh and the surrounding The Triangle, using the same process on every job regardless of size: proper subfloor prep, correct underlayment, and precise fitting so the finished floor doesn’t shift, gap, or sound hollow underfoot, the most common complaints with a poorly installed laminate floor. Our own crew handles the job from the free estimate through the final walkthrough, and Raleigh homeowners rate us 5.0 stars on Google for exactly that kind of consistency.
Laminate needs a flat, stable surface underneath it. We check for unevenness or damage before installation, since laminate installed over a bad subfloor is how you end up with a floor that flexes or sounds hollow when you walk on it.
The right underlayment affects sound, moisture resistance, and comfort underfoot. We choose underlayment based on your subfloor type and the room, not a single default for every job.
Like hardwood, laminate needs time to adjust to your home's humidity and temperature before installation, which matters given how much Raleigh's humidity shifts between seasons.
Laminate is a floating floor in most cases, meaning it's not nailed or glued to the subfloor, which requires precise fitting at transitions and edges to look and perform correctly.
We walk the finished floor with you, checking transitions, trim, and fit before calling the job complete.
This is the question we get asked most on laminate jobs, and the honest answer depends on the room. Laminate generally gives a more realistic wood-grain look and texture, and it’s a strong, cost-effective option for living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways without heavy moisture exposure. LVP (luxury vinyl plank) is fully waterproof, which makes it the better choice for kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, or any space where water is a regular concern, laminate’s core material can swell or warp with sustained moisture exposure in a way LVP simply doesn’t.
For most main living areas in a Raleigh home, laminate is a great fit. For anything moisture-prone, we’ll generally steer you toward LVP instead, and explain why during your estimate rather than installing whichever material is more convenient for us.
Laminate is one of the more budget-friendly flooring options we install, but the final number still depends on more than just square footage.
What actually affects that number:
We walk your space in person and give you a written number based on what we actually find, not a rate pulled off a price sheet before we’ve seen the room.

If budget allows and the room doesn't see heavy moisture, real hardwood still offers a resale value laminate can't fully match.
For kitchens, bathrooms, and mudrooms, LVP's waterproof core makes it the more durable choice over laminate.
Entryways and bathrooms with constant water exposure are usually better served by tile than any wood-look material.
Already have hardwood that's lost its shine? Refinishing is often the better call before considering a switch to laminate.
Existing laminate with a few damaged planks doesn't always need a full replacement, we can often repair a section instead.
Don't just take our word for it. Oak City Floors has earned 5-star reviews from homeowners across Raleigh and The Triangle. See what your neighbours are saying on Google, then call for your free estimate.

We had a fairly small LVT job - many companies did not want to be bothered or would charge a minimum. Oscar was a professional - he came out to measure then sent us a formal written estimate later that day. We wanted some custom baseboards added to the job, which he agreed to do. His price was very reasonable, his crew was outstanding, the job was completed efficiently and on-time. Best of all, the work is PERFECT.Posted on Google![]()

I can’t say enough good things about the work that Oak City Floor did for us. They were professional, on time, and went above and beyond what we expected them to do. They even went under the house to fix a squeak in the floor that could not be fixed above. Beautiful work and I recommend them highly!Posted on Google![]()

Oak City Floors did an incredible job. They were more than willing to talk through all our questions and concerns. When they were done they went above and beyond to knock out our punch list. They even came back a couple days later to correct a small scratch I put in the floor while moving our fridge back in place - no charge. Very nice folks. I would definitely recommend them to others and would happily call them for another job should I have one pop up. Attached are some before an after photos - an incredible difference. VERY HAPPY!!!!Posted on Google![]()

Our 5.0-star rating didn't come from marketing, it came from floors that don't flex, gap, or sound hollow six months later.
No subcontracted crews learning your floor plan on the fly. The people on-site are trained and accountable to us directly.
If a room's moisture exposure makes LVP the smarter choice, we'll say so, even if laminate is the easier sell.
Your written estimate reflects your subfloor, your square footage, and your material grade, not a generic rate that shifts once we're on-site.
Whoever measures your space is whoever's installing your floor.
These steps get skipped by installers trying to move fast. We don't skip them.
Cost depends on laminate grade, square footage, and subfloor condition. We provide a free in-home estimate for an exact number before work begins.
Most laminate is water-resistant but not fully waterproof. For rooms with regular moisture exposure like bathrooms or kitchens, we typically recommend LVP instead.
Laminate generally offers a more realistic wood-grain texture and lower cost, while LVP is fully waterproof and better suited to moisture-prone rooms. We'll walk you through the tradeoff based on the specific room during your estimate.
